The Wonderful World of Shelties
Please note: we have not had Sheltie puppies since 2013 and are not likely to have them again. Sorry 🙁
Shetland Sheepdogs, more commonly known as shelties, are a wonderful breed of dog. They strongly resemble the collie, however are a breed all on their own. Shelties are smaller sized dogs that usually grow 13-16 inches in height at the withers and can weigh 10-25lbs on average. Shelties also have a very long life span, with very long lives we have heard of over 16-18 years! They are known for their incredibly socialble and companionable personalities and how wonderful they are with children, as well as cats, dogs and other pets. Shelties are a hard-working dog who are always willing to please their masters and will work hard to do so. They are known for being intensely loyal to their owners though sometimes reserved around strangers.
Shelties are wonderful, lively, playful, alert and trainable dogs. They are super affectionate dogs and can actually make very good watch dogs. They have a strong herding instinct and love to chase and herd things like animals such as squirrels, ducks, and even children! Shelties will need lots of attention and exercise to keep them happy and active. If they get bored or neglected, they will be likely to be distructive in their behaviour. Once getting the attention and exercise they need however, they will become the amazing dogs they are meant to be again.
Shelties can come in a variety of colours, including sable, sable/white, blue merle or tri-colour. Each colouring is unique and will make beautiful adult dogs. Much care needs to be taken before breeding a sheltie, as putting two colours together that should not be bred together can leave the ensuing puppies blind and/or deaf. Sheltie adults also should have hips, ears and eyes tested prior to breeding to ensure the best care possible for future litters.
Overall, the Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie) is an amazing dog, with a long great life ahead of them when they are raised properly and given the best nutrition, exercise and attention during their life. Our motto in our house has come to be “Once you go sheltie, you never go back” due to the amount of people who want their next dogs only to be sheltie after having such wonderful prior experiences with shelties. If you want a loyal, companionable and super intelligent dog, consider a sheltie as your new addition!
